Hadestown at the Morrison Center in Boise

I wasn’t sure what this show was about… in fact it wasn’t until I arrived that I even googled it to see what I was about to see. I often go back-and-forth between wanting to know what I’m about to see and what is shortly going to be in front of me.

The venue itself set the perfect stage for this modern retelling of the classic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The lights dimmed, and you could feel every heart in the room beat a little faster.

While I may have pushed back on getting too excited to see the show for the first few scenes, I must admit as the curtain rose, we were transported to the world of Hadestown—where summer meets winter, and the sweet music of love intertwines with the somber notes of misery. You could feel every emotion in the music, with haunting melodies that lingered long after the final curtain.

The performance was nothing short of outstanding. The leads embodied their characters with such depth and conviction. Orpheus—the hopeful, passionate musician—was played with a sensitivity that made you root for him from the get-go. And Eurydice, whose struggles were portrayed with such raw honesty.

The casts’ energy brought to the stage was impressive. I’ll admit I found myself immersed, as the show had drawn me into the story with their powerful voices and great play design.

I didn’t know this, but after some searching, I quickly found that Hadestown is renowned for its unique visual aesthetic, and the Morrison Center truly brought that magic to life. The industrial, steampunk vibe combined with ethereal lighting made you feel like you had stepped directly into the story. The way the set transformed from the bright warmth of the earth to the shadowy depths of the underworld was like poetry in motion. It was a feast for the eyes and only added to the overall atmosphere.

As the show approached its climax, I felt a tension in the air. Would Orpheus be able to save Eurydice from the clutches of Hades And just when you thought you had it all figured out, unexpected twists.
