Spirit Airlines: Is the discount worth the experience?

If you’ve ever pondered over flying Spirit Airlines, you’re not alone. It’s a topic that sparks debate among travelers. Like that friend who’s always up for an adventure but can sometimes be a bit unpredictable, Spirit offers its own unique charm but comes with a set of quirks. I flew Spirit Airlines for the first time in December and I thought I’d give my perspective on the value proposition.

The Perks of Flying Spirit Airlines

Budget-Friendly Fares:

Let’s get real – the biggest draw for Spirit Airlines is its ultra-low fares. If you’re like most travelers trying to keep your budget in check, Spirit can sometimes offer fares that are hard to resist. Imagine getting a round-trip ticket for the cost of a dinner! I was able to get a round-trip ticket to Las Vegas from Boise for $45 each way! It’s perfect for spontaneous weekend getaways or any trip where saving a buck is key.

Frequent Sales:

Spirit is notorious for its sales and promotions, so if you’ve got your eyes peeled, you might just score an even better deal. Keep an eye on their social media channels or sign up for their email alerts, you never know when a fare drop might hit!

Multiple Destinations:

While they only fly to Vegas from Boise, Spirit’s network connects many locations, especially in the U.S. and Caribbean. Whether you're dreaming of visiting beaches or the city, they might just have your route covered.

No-Frills Flexibility:

For those who prefer to travel light, Spirit’s base fare approach allows you to pay only for what you need. If you’re traveling with just a personal item (that fits under the seat – think small backpack).

The Drawbacks of Flying Spirit Airlines

Add-On Fees Galore:

Ah, the infamous Spirit Airlines add-on fees. Wanna check a bag? Extra! Need legroom? Extra!. Snacks? You guessed it – Extra! What to have a seatbelt? Extra! (Okay, just kidding on the seatbelt!) While you might score a great deal on your ticket, the add-ons can quickly add up, leaving a dent in your wallet.

Limited Comfort:

Let’s face it: Spirit is not about luxury. The seats are more compact, legroom is limited, and the boarding process can feel a bit chaotic at times. If you’re taller than average or enjoy a bit of personal space, be prepared for a snug experience. It’s more about getting from point A to B than enjoying a plush ride. I was able to get a “Big” seat on a few of the flights I’ve taken, and for the extra dollars, I’d say it’s well worth the cost. The extra legroom is a game-changer for me!

Flight Delays and Cancellations:

While every flight I’ve now flown on with Spirit has been ontime or ahead of schedule, Spirit has garnered a bit of a reputation for delayed flights. If you pride yourself on being punctual (or just hate sitting in an airport), this could lead to a few frustrating hours. As with any airline, it’s good to stay updated on flight status.

Overall, flying Spirit Airlines can be a mixed bag. For budget-conscious travelers willing to trade comfort and some services for ridiculously low fares, it can feel like a travel jackpot. However, if you're someone who prefers a cushier experience without unexpected fees, you might want to think twice—or at least do your homework.
