Mean Girls Takes the Stage at the Morrison Center!
Again, another one of those shows which I had no idea what I was getting into… I’d assumed it was just going to be a repeat of the movie I’ve watched… well, I will admit, from the beginning, I was pleasantly surprised.
As the lights dimmed and the curtain went up, we were instantaneously thrown into the colorful world of North Shore High School. The energy was infectious! The cast was spot-on, capturing Karen, Gretchen, Cady, and of course, Regina George with such flair. Let’s just say that Regina was everything you imagined and more—sassy, commanding, and oh-so-mean, yet the audience couldn’t help but laugh at her antics. Was this the first of Glee?
If you’ve read other blogs about the shows, you’ll know contemporary pop is something I greatly enjoy, so you’ll not be surprised to hear me say the soundtrack perfectly weaved contemporary pop sounds with the story, highlighting everything from high school drama to friendship and everything in between. The songs were catchy, and while I may deny it, I found myself tapping my feet. It was a new thing… I’ve never been in an audience of a play where folks were singing along… honestly, many audience members couldn’t resist the urge to sing along.
Now, let’s not overlook the set design. Dang! The colors and imaginative spaces transported us straight into the hallways of high school—complete with locker-lined walls and a wild cafeteria scene. You could almost smell the pizza and teen angst! The attention to detail was inspiring, reminding us all how storytelling knows no bounds when it comes to creativity—which seems to always be present at shows at the Morrison Center!
For those of you who have seen the movie, you know the storyline hits home on so many levels. The themes of self-discovery, friendship, and the struggle against the Plastics resonate with everyone, no matter what age. The performance seamlessly blended humor with emotional moments that had us all reflecting on our own high school experiences. It was a masterclass in how to tackle tough issues with a lighthearted approach.
